Psst...Parents....Let me give you a little hint.
Do you want your child's teacher to like your kid just a little bit more? I mean...not to cheat for them, but to love them a little bit more? Here's what you do: Buy your child's teacher a ream of paper.
Yes, a ream of paper will guarantee your child an excuse from time out and maybe 3 minutes longer on the computer for at least a week.
I am determined that my county does not know how to add. May be the main reason why the budget seems to be so messed up and the community is in a huff all the time. You see it is required that I send students homework (damn learning...I'll get it right someday) each week. You have probably read my feelings about home learning (if not stop here and check that out first). What parents don't know is that the same paper I am using to send the kiddies home work (ugh!!!) learning is the same supply that I need for assessments (that's test y'all. Seems test makes the children anxious...assessments is calming) activities, seat work and the like . I am allowed two reams of paper each month and at the first of the month I run into a proverbial welfare line circa 1930 of teachers who are waiting for their ration of paper. Sometimes I run out.
Of course the one time that I run our of paper a parent calls the principal to report that I have not sent her child any home learning. I am now a bad teacher. The principal has called my classroom in the middle of the lesson (which I have to admit was going exceptionally well) to inquire why I did not send a home learning packet this week.
Let's do the math:
There are 500 sheets in a ream of paper.
I have 34 students.
A good homework pack has one activity a day. I don't give Friday home learning...so 4 activities
4 x 34 = 136
Times 4 weeks = 544 pages.
I am allowed 400 copies a month.
Yeah.
So anyway mom is telling Ms. Principal that I have not given out any home learning this week and she really believes that her chuld's grades would be higher if I gave out home work on a regular basis....because...you know...the kid's need to be able to do home learning (this is a direct quote).
So a meeting has been set for me, mom, and the principal Monday afternoon. Along with me I will bring the last 6 home learning packets that have been turned in from this child...incomplete.
I will also give them my paper math.
And yes...I will post details of this intelligent conversation I am about to have.
Can't wait.
Yeah.
